Administrator of Assisted Living

Panorama employee for 13 years

From the time I was very young, I knew that I wanted to help people, and working in the medical field seemed like the best way to do that. While in high school, I took science classes in addition to a certified nursing assistant (C-NA) course in order to get a job right after graduation. By the time I applied to work at Panorama in 2005, I had already enjoyed 7 years working as a C-NA elsewhere. I had no idea where the job at Panorama would eventually take me. 

After 10 months in Panorama’s long-term care facility, I transferred to Assisted Living. Not long after, I progressed from C-NA to Medication Assistant. Within that same year, I also assisted with developing a new Medical Records program. In 2009, our Assisted Living Department felt the need for a full-time Administrative Assistant position, supporting the Administrator and the needs of the department. I took on this role in addition to my responsibilities as Medication Assistant. After 6 years in the Administrative Assistant role, the job for Administrator came available and I felt that I had the knowledge and met the criteria to apply. I got the job and am proud to say I’ve been the Assisted Living Administrator for 4 years now!

When I came to Panorama, I really had no idea that I would eventually become the Administrator of the Assisted Living facility. It took many years of patience and hard work to gain the experience that has enabled me to help others in this role. The most rewarding part of this journey has been knowing that I make a difference in people’s lives, even if it’s a small difference. The expressions of appreciation we hear from residents and their family members is a reminder of why I do this every day.  

I’ve learned a lot in the two decades I’ve been part of the aging services community. The most important thing for young people to know before they consider a career in aging services it that people don’t stop being capable adults just because they get older. Everyone has led a life full of their own amazing stories and accomplishments. You can learn so much more than you ever thought just by listening. Each individual wants options and they want to make their own decisions. You’re there to provide support when they need it and to help them feel secure so they can continue with their independence.

If you truly enjoy helping people, I would definitely suggest considering a career in aging services. It’s very rewarding. I go home each day feeling fulfilled and knowing that I contributed to the quality of life for others.
